Suggested Dose and Duration of Saw Palmetto
reviewed by X. Li, Ph. D.
(credential)
As we discussed in saw palmetto benefits under studies,
extensive clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate the saw palmetto health benefits.
In these trials where the positive effects of saw palmetto were observed on
relieving symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), people took standardized saw palmetto extract
at dose of 320 mg daily for one month to one year.
The daily dose can be taken once or divided to twice before meals. In most trials,
the daily dose was divided to two times. The optimal dose for saw palmetto extract is not well studied. One study compared taking 160 mg per dose
twice daily (320 mg per day) or three times daily (480 mg). Both dose groups were found equally effective and
no significant difference was noticed.
As active ingredients of saw palmetto are extracted as oily preparations, saw palmetto extracts are mostly available
in the softgel form, softgels were more preferred in clinical trials than tablets as
the active ingredients in softgels are more likely preserved in natural and active forms.
