  1. Q: Why should I take a standardized saw palmetto extract? What is it?
A: When scientists study saw palmetto for its clinical use and its mechanism of action, they use the extract preparations that are standardized for the same active components. Only in this way, results from different studies can be comparable and consistent. As any herb is composed of thousands of chemicals, different ways of extraction may give dramatically different amounts of its active ingredients. When a saw palmetto extract is standardized you know it is the type of extract used in studies and contains the same amount of active ingredients. This means you can expect it to produce the same benefits shown in studies. A standardized saw palmetto extract is standardized to contain at least 85% of fatty acids and sterols.

  2. Q: How can I tell if a saw palmetto product is standardized?
A: Saw palmetto sold on markets are in many different forms. Many of them are not standardized. Some of them are labelled stardardized but when you look at the supplement facts on the labels their active ingredients are in much lower amounts. To tell if a saw palmetto product is standardized, you just need to look at the label under supplement facts and see if you can find fatty acids and sterols at 85% or higher. If you can it is standardized. Otherwise it is not.

  3. Q: Does saw palmetto have any effect on sexual function?
A: Many saw palmetto clinical trials have addressed the question. It was found consistently that sap palmetto does not have any adverse effect on sex desire or impotence. On contrary, finasteride and tamsulosin, standard therapy for BPH or LUTS, are associated with reduced sexual function.

  4. Q: Can I use saw palmetto for prostatitis?
A: Some people use saw palmetto for prostatitis. However, this application of saw palmetto is not yet supported by scientific studies.

  5. Q: Does saw palmetto interfere with my test on prostate cancer?
A: Prostate cancer is among the most common cancers in men and its early detection is crucial to its prognosis. One way to screen for prostate cancer is to measure the level of PSA (prostate specific antigen) which is increased in prostate cancer. Studies have confirmed that saw palmetto does not change the PSA level. Therefore, saw palmetto does not affect the prostate cancer test. On contrary, finasteride causes marked reduction of PSA and it thus renders the PSA test much useless in prostate cancer diagnosis.

  6. Q: Is there any saw palmetto interaction with drugs?
A: So far, no saw palmetto drug interaction has been reported or noticed.

  7. Q: Is there danger in taking proscar to cause cancer? Does Saw Palmetto help prostate problems?  An enlarger prostate with PSA 7.2.
A:Proscar is not known to cause cancer. However it will reduce the value of PSA, which is an diagnostic indicator of prostate cancer, and thus may cause the overlook of prostate cancer when it happens. A PSA value of 7.2 is at the borderline. Saw palmetto helps prostate enlargement problem without altering PSA and you can check it in details
    here.

  8. Q: My Father, at 89, has had prostate cancer and is having a lot of urinary problems now. He also takes a high blood pressure medicine. Would this herb hurt him because of his age or the medications he takes?
A:Saw Palmetto clinical studies were done on men less than 80 years old and no credible data shows it has any effect on hypertension although occasionally you may see claims that it either lowers or increases blood pressure.
