Si Jun Zi Tang Wan (Si Jun Zi Tang Pian, Si Jun Zi Tang, Si Jun Zi Wan,
四君子汤片),
literally "Four Gentlemen Teapills" in Chinese,
is a regarded classic Chinese herbal formula for supplementing Spleen Qi energy and
promoting the digestive function. A weak Spleen Qi may be shown as pale face, low soft voice,
loss of appetite, and loose stool. The mild action of the Chinese herb makes it excellent
in use from time to time to maintain a strong digestive function even when no digestive discomfort is evident.†

What does it do?
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the Spleen is the most important organ of the body in absorbing
the nutrients from the food and transforming them into the Yin, Yang, and Qi energy etc, the
fundamental elements in regulating our overall body functions. A strong Spleen function supplies
the body abundant Yin, Yang, Qi and nutrients. When the Spleen Qi is inadequate, adsorption and
transportation of nutrients is affected, causing pale face, low soft voice, poor appetite,
loose stool, weakness of limbs, weak pulse etc.
Si Jun Zi Tang is the basic Chinese herbal formula that supports Spleen Qi. The formula consists of
four Chinese herbs, Ginseng or Codonopsis, Atractylodes, Poria, and Licorice. Among them, Ginseng or Codonopsis
replenishes the Qi energy and harmonizes the Spleen; Atractylodes is a key tonic for the Spleen and Stomach
and dries Dampness; Poria acts mainly to remove Dampness but it also strengthens the Spleen;
Licorice tonifies Spleen and Qi and synchronizes the action of the other herbs.
Studies have been conducted to explore the action of Si Jun Zi Tang in modern biomedical terms. For example,
one study applied Si Jun Zi Tang to patients who just had operations on their gastrointestinal tumor.
B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes and some T subtypes, cytokines like interleukin 1, 2, 6 and
tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) etc were measured before and after the application in control and treated
groups. It was shown that Si Jun Zi Tang treatment significantly increased total lymphocytes, CD3 and CD4 cell counts,
and interleukin 2 serum level whereas it reduced the levels of interleukin 6, TNF-alpha and CRP (C-reactive protein).
It was concluded that Si Jun Zi Tang may relieve post-operational stress and inflammatory response
and enhance the immune function of patients.1†
