Dong Qing Dan Shen Pian (Dong Qing Dan Shen Wan,
冬青丹参丸),
literally "Ilex & Salvia Tablets" in Chinese,
is a Chinese herbal medicine specially formulated to support a healthy
heart function.† The Chinese medicine may help promote blood flow in
the heart and manage occurrence of symptoms like chest pain and angina in people
who are at higher risk of coronary artery disease and
heart attack.†

What does it do?
Coronary artery disease or coronary heart disease is the narrowing of the wall of the coronary arteries that supply
the muscles of the heart with oxygen and nutrients. The resulting limitation of blood flow
to the heart may cause lack of oxygen and nutrients in the heart and may be felt as oppressed
sensation in the heart and chest and chest pain (angina pectoris). In severe conditions
myocardial cells may die and cause heart attack. Coronary artery disease is developed as a result of
inflammation of cells in the inner lining of coronary arteries in a process called atherosclerosis that
fills the wall with the plaques.
Dong Qing Dan Shen Pian consists of a unique array of Chinese herbs that are known in traditional Chinese
medicine to activate blood, remove blood stasis, and nourish the heart. The Chinese medicine
is our signature formula for the care of coronary artery disease.
Mao Dong Qing (Ilex Pubescens root) is the chief Chinese herb in the formula with
the property of activating blood and cleaning the vessels. In
China its preparations are often used in clinics to treat coronary artery disease and angina with
satisfying results.† In various studies most patients were observed with significant improvement
in symptoms like chest pain and dizziness after intake of Ilex preparations for one month. No severe side
effect was noticed. In animal models, it has been found that Ilex extracts may expand or dilate
the coronary arteries to increase the blood flow. The effect is slower to onset but lasts longer than
nitroglycerin. Moreover, components isolated from Ilex Pubescens are found to have anti-platelet
aggregation1 and anti-inflammation2 activities. Thus, the Chinese herb may
act both at increasing blood flow and reducing atherosclerosis to be beneficial to heart health.
Dan Shen (Salvia root) is another chief Chinese herb in the formula. Dan Shen
is very known and perhaps the most commonly used in Chinese medicine for promoting blood circulation and removing
blood stasis.† A Dan Shen preparation was recently
reported to have successfully passed a phase II clinical trial for angina in USA.
Tan Xiang (Sandalwood) is a precious wood and in Chinese medicine moves Qi and warms the stomach.
The Chinese herb has been used for coronary artery disease and angina.
Chuan Xiong root is an important Chinese herb that invigorates Blood, moves Qi,
expels Wind, and relieves Pain. It is often used together with Salvia root, Sandalwood, and Safflower
for angina.
Hong Hua (Safflower) is known to promote blood circulation, resolve blood stasis,
and relieve pain. The Chinese herb is usually combined with Chuan Xiong to treat angina pectoris
in Chinese medicine.
Guang Yu Jin (Curcuma root) moves Qi and invigorates Blood to alleviate depression and
pain in the chest and flank region caused by stagnation of Qi and Blood.
Chai Hu (Bupleurum root) is one of the most commonly used Chinese herbs. It
disperses Qi and promotes Qi circulation. It works together with Curcuma root to alleviate depression and
chest pain.
San Qi (Notoginseng root) is a key Chinese herb used for heart and circulation health.
It both invigorates and nourishes Blood.
