What does it do?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), our body is vulnerable to the attacks of pathogenic factors.
The body normally forms a natural line of defense to ward off the attacks from the surface.
When the defense gets weaker, it is more susceptible to the attacks and easily contracts cold and flu.
The pathogenic factors can be wind, heat, cold, dampness etc
in TCM terms and some of these in modern medical terms belong to bacteria and viruses (e. g., cold viruses
and flu viruses).
Ren Shen Bai Du Wan is a classic Chinese medicine that acts both to relieve the attacks of pathogenic factors
and to build up the defense. The Chinese medicine was originally formulated to help kids whose underlying
Qi energy and the defense function are still developing to relieve the symptoms caused by the invasion of
the wind-cold-dampness. The symptoms are typically manifested as high fever but
feeling chill with shivering, no sweating, stiffness and pain in the head and neck,
soreness and pain of the body, stuffy nose, cough with phlegm, and coarse voice.
In the formula, Ren Shen (Ginseng) or Dang Shen (Codonopsis) acts to enhance the Qi energy or help the body
clear away the pathogenic influences. Qiang Huo (Notopterygium root) and Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens) are warm and bitter,
work together to expel wind and remove dampness. Ren Shen Bai Du Wan is indicated in China Pharmacopoeia1 for nourishing the Qi energy,
relieving the exterior symptoms with sweating, dispersing wind and eliminating dampness.
Although it is mainly used for cold/flu, Ren Shen Bai Du Wan is also helpful in clearing skin eruptions like dermatitis
and suppurative infections.
Since swine flu outbreak occurred this spring, Ren Shen Bai Du San has become a major Chinese medicine
recommended by Chinese medicine experts and health authorities for the prevention and treatment of
the swine flu because the swine flu symptoms fits well with its application.†
