    What does it do?

Bone spurs (osteophytes) form when the body attempts to heal itself by building more bone around a damaged or degenerating area. This is often a part of the aging process. As we age, the cartilage which cushions the bones within our joints breaks down, and eventually begins to wear away. This condition is known as osteoarthritis (OA). Intervertebral discs which cushion the spaces between the bones of the spine may also break down with age. This creates pain, swelling and possibly bone spurs (overgrowth). Bone spurs are especially common in the joints of the spine and feet.

Kang Gu Zeng Sheng Pian is an important formula for addressing the above conditions. Kang Gu Zeng Sheng Pian tonifies the Liver and Kidney, strengthens the tendons and bones, dispels Wind-Damp, invigorates and nourishes the Blood, unblocks the channels and relieves pain. Modern research suggests that Kang Gu Zeng Sheng Pian may also encourage cartilage regeneration and shrink bone spurs.

Kang Gu Zeng Sheng Pian is composed of 10 herbs which perform the essential functions of tonifying the Liver and Kidneys, strengthening the tendons and bones, invigorating and nourishing the blood and unblocking the channels to relieve pain and promote healing.

Shu Di Huang (processed Rehmannia root) is a powerful Chinese herb used to nourishes Yin and blood. Shu Di Huang also tonifies essence (Jing) and strengthens the marrow of the bones. Rou Cong Rong (Cistanche) is used to tonify the Yang, which is essential in bone-related conditions. It is also a blood and essence tonic.

Niu Xi (Achyranthes root) is a Liver and Kidney (Yin) tonic but also invigorates blood, relieves stasis and strengthens tendons and bones. Niu Xi is used for its additional ability to anchor hyper ascendant Liver Yang (which often results from Kidney and Liver deficiency related to the aging process). Niu Xi is also highly beneficial in the treatment of joint pain.

Nu Zhen Zi (Ligustrum) is a somewhat mild Yin tonic, but is not as oily or cloying as Shu Di Huang. Nu Zhen Zi is used for deficiency type bone pain (steaming bone disorder) and has known anti-inflammatory effects.1 Gou Ji (Cibot rhizome) are used to strengthen the sinews and bones while supplementing the liver and kidney.

Lu Xian Cao (Pyrola) clears wind-dampness which is frequently associated with arthritis. Lu Xian Cao also tonifies the Kidneys, strengthens tendons and bones and is particularly effective at relieving bone spurs when combined with Ying Yang Huo (Horny Goat weed), Ji Xue Teng (Spatholobus) and Gu Sui Bu (Drynaria).

Ying Yang Huo tonifies the Kidneys and Yang energy while dispelling wind damp and alleviating pain. Gu Sui Bu tonifies the Kidneys and promotes the healing of bones and relieves pain. Gu Sui Bu has been shown to be especially good at relieving joint pain associated with osteoarthritis.2 Ji Xue Teng is an important herb in this formula because it invigorates as well as tonifies the blood while relaxing tendons and opening the channel pathways.

Lai Fu Zi (Radish seed) promotes digestion which is an important consideration with this formula, as most Yin and Kidney tonics are cloying in nature and therefore difficult to digest. Caution should be exercised in cases with underlying digestive deficiency.
