What does it do?

The Chinese name Shi Quan Da Bu Tang literally means "all-inclusive great tonifying decoction" or "ten complete tonic decoction." This classical formula powerfully tonifies Qi and blood and also warms the Yang. It is traditionally used for lack of energy, lack of physical strength, pale face, low appetite, aversion to cold, spontaneous perspiration, or weakness of the lower extremities.

The original source of the formula Shi Quan Da Bu Pian can be traced back to the Imperial Grace Formulary of the Tai Ping Era. Today it remains an important tool used for the treatment of patterns of predominant Qi and blood deficiency with moderate Yang deficiency or cold.

Subjects may present with a pale tongue with a white coating. The pulse may be thin, weak and slow.

Shi Quan Da Bu Pian is based on the classical formula Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) with the addition of Huang Qi (Astragalus) and Rou Gui (Cinnamon bark). Ba Zhen Tang itself is a combination of the classical formulas Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentleman Decoction) and Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) which are the flagship Traditional Chinese Medicine formulas used to tonify Qi and blood, respectively.

Ren Shen (Ginseng) is traditionally the chief herb of both Ba Zhen Tang and Shi Quan Da Bu Tang, however today Dang Shen (Codonopsis root) is usually substituted at around 2-3 times the dose. While Dang Shen, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria) and Gan Cao (Licorice) tonify the Qi, Shu Di Huang (processed Rehmannia root), Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica root), Bai Shao (white Peony root) and Chuan Xiong (Szechuan Lovage rhizome) nourish and gently move the blood.

Because chronic or profound Qi deficiency often presents with concurrent Yang deficiency cold, Shi Quan Da Bu Pian is modified with the addition of Huang Qi and Rou Gui. Huang Qi is a prized Chinese herb for its ability to support immune function by tonifying Lung and Spleen Qi, consolidating the exterior and raising Yang.

Rou Gui is effective at warming Yang and dispelling cold. These modifications make Shi Quan Da Bu Pian an indispensable supplement in the TCM treatment of patients with cold deficiency patterns to restore vitality and optimum health.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised by the obvious quality of this product I'm a doctor of Chinese medicine. While I generally prefer raw herbs for my own use, I periodically try different tablet/pill formulas for my patients, for their convenience. Of course, I want the quality of the product to be very good, so my patients will get the results they expect from their prescription. I was pleased to see that after a little over a week, I saw the changes I was looking for both subjectively (a general increase in energy, digestive functions, and others) and objectively, in my pulses and tongue (Chinese diagnostic indicators). I have no reservation about recommending this to my patients, and will probably use them myself for my own convenience when I don't want to take the time to brew up raw herbs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from When Gui Pi Tang was not strong enough... I had been taking Gui Pi Tang religiously for two years but I started feeling not as strong as my rigorous school program progressed. I also felt cold from the strong A/C in classroom. I was recommended to step up to Shi Quan Da Bu Pian and felt better in stamina; for the cold problem, I have had to use other herb formula in my case later but I think this is a great classic way to start on a total care on fatigue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Totally awesome product! I have only been taking TotalTonic for a couple of weeks, but already I have noticed many good benefits from this formula. It brings me an overall sense of well-being, and a positive mood. I seem to be able to sleep better at night. In a nutshell, I really like the way it makes me feel.! I would definitely recommend it to others, especially for people aged 55 and above. I have been taking 5 tablets once a day, but I'm going to try taking it twice a day since I am seeing such good results.
