    What does it do?

Stroke, or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), occurs when nerve damage in a specific region of the brain is caused by obstruction of blood flow. The primary signs of a stroke may be loss of consciousness and hemiplegia (one-sided paralysis). Additional signs may be present which vary and depend upon the area of the brain affected. Strokes are serious and often fatal. Initial treatment focuses around life-saving measures. Later, treatment shifts to rehabilitative therapies aimed at restoration of function and faculties. The first 6 months of recovery following a stroke are considered the most important and the most predictive of long-term residual deficits.

This condition is called Zhong Feng or "wind stroke" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Zhong Feng may result from a variety of causes according to TCM theory. Yin deficiency, hyper-ascendant Liver Yang, Yang exuberance, fire, phlegm-damp obstruction, blood stasis, and internal or external pathogenic Wind are all possible causes of Zhong Feng. Often, several of these conditions exist at once in a complex pattern.

Zhong Feng Hui Chun Pian supports the recovery phase following a stroke by promoting blood circulation to dispel blood stasis, relaxing the muscles and tendons, removing obstructions from the channels and expelling pathogenic wind. This Chinese herbal formula may also be used for apoplexy (sudden appearance of symptoms of stroke), hemiplegia (one-sided paralysis), Bell's Palsy, distortion of the face, numbness of limbs and face, drooling, slurred speech and infantile convulsion.

Warning: A stroke is a potentially life-threatening condition. If you think you may be having a stroke, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Zhong Feng Hui Chun Pian is composed of 16 herbs which support the recovery phase following a stroke by tonifying Yin, releasing Wind, opening the orifices, anchoring Yang and removing blood stasis and phlegm obstruction.

Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia root) is an important Yin tonic that both generates fluids and clears heat from the blood level. Bai Fu Zi (Typhonium) is a phlegm-resolving herb that dries dampness, dispels wind (particularly from the face) and stops convulsions. Bai Fu Zi is especially effective for post-stroke deviation of the eyes and mouth and facial paralysis when it is used (as it is here) along with Jiang Can (Silkworm with Batrytis) and Quan Xie (Scorpion), as in the Classical formula Qian Zheng San (牵正散). Jiang Can and Quan Xie extinguish Liver Wind, unblock the vessels and stop tremors and convulsions. Quan Xie has been studied in the treatment of cerebral embolism.1 Jiang Can also dispels phlegm.

Dan Nan Xing (Artisaema Pulvis) is a phlegm resolving herb that clears heat, calms Wind and stops convulsions. Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica root) is a blood tonic herb which also has the unique property of being able to simultaneously invigorate the blood. Zhi Ban Xia (Prepared Pinellia root) clears phlegm and directs rebellious Qi downward. Similarly, Zhu Ru (Bamboo shavings) clears heat and dissolves phlegm but also directs the Qi downward. Sheng Da Huang (fresh Rhubarb root) is a purgative herb which powerfully clears damp-heat by draining downward. Here, Da Huang is also used for its ability to powerfully activate the blood and clear blood stasis. Huang Qin (Scutellaria) clears heat, sedates fire, dries dampness and especially benefits the upper body.

Ming Tian Ma (Gastrodia) pacifies the Liver, anchors hyperascendant Liver Yang and extinguishes Wind. Ming Tian Ma is frequently used for stroke with hemiplegia, numbness and slurred speech as it is here in combination with Dan Nan Xing, Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong rhizome) and Chi Shao (Red Peony). Chuan Xiong activates the blood and Qi, but also dispels Wind due to its aromatic and dispersing properties. Chi Shao clears heat and cools the blood and is particularly effective at dispelling blood stasis and relieving pain. Chi Shao is commonly used in cases of post-stroke hemiplegia and has been studied for use in cases of cerebral thrombosis.2

Hong Hua (Safflower) is an extremely important herb for eliminating blood stasis and opening the channels. Shi Chang Pu (Acorus) is one of the best herbs to open the orifices and clear obstruction caused by phlegm. Shi Chang Pu also calms the spirit (Shen). Fu Ling (Poria) resolves dampness, calms the spirit and strengthens the Spleen.
